The mobile phone industry is surely one of the truly great technological leaps made by mankind, certainly in the 20th century, and unquestionably ranks alongside the Internet, the iPod, Google and perhaps even the moon landings (albeit not as glamorous but certainly with less latency!). Today the mobile phone is just one of those things we can’t lead our lives without, and a technology that few would question has changed our society. Let me illustrate this point with a rather abstract question: How do you ring a doorbell – with your index finger or your thumb?
Chances are, if you’re under 25 it’s a stupid question: you use your thumb of course and furthermore, I’m a dim-wit for asking such a dumb question! But before the introduction of the mobile phone and texting, Charles Darwin’s evolutionary development had our opposable thumbs pretty much confined to rather mundane tasks like clamping stuff and err, well clamping stuff really, this capability just about keeping mankind above our primate cousins and yet the advent of the mobile phone and sms changed all of that (the thumb bit that is ..). Where’s all this going in relation to security? Well –
Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at the ‘Mobile Backhaul Asia 2009’ conference in Hong Kong organized by Beacon on the topic of security and resilience in the mobile arena. Other agenda items were wide and varied, covering an extensive collection of topics including technologies to future-proof mobile networks and merge and converge 2G/3G/4G networks, discussions on appropriate timelines for upgrading backhaul networks to cope with future bandwidth-hungry applications, discussions around WIMAX and – a very common thread amongst numerous presenters over the two-day conference – the emergence of IP-based technologies in the mobile environment.
Now the mobile industry is one well versed in change, and innovation, and doing things differently, and nowhere more so than here in Asia where consumers have rapidly taken the technology to heart and governments have taken giant strides in public infrastructure development − not by laying mile after mile of cable, but instead building out base station after base station to wirelessly connect their citizens.
The mobile communications industry has pretty much stood as a beacon for technological advancement in the latter part of the 20th century, and whilst the “fixed-line” world and the Internet has steadily drowned in a rising tide of security threats from web-based crime, malware and SPAM, often just about standing on tiptoes to face the next deluge, the mobile telephony world has been comparatively immune to cyber-crime – but I predict all that is about to change, most likely due to the industry’s continued drive for advancement and the technology curse of interoperability, open standards and our old friend – IP.
Historically, the threats facing the mobile industry have been confined to issues surrounding the network itself: risks such as toll fraud, protection of user data, threats to physical assets such as theft of copper cabling and property at numerous remote sites, and challenges to connectivity through cable cuts caused by natural occurrences such as earthquakes but also from the curse of the JCB digger (often referred to as “backhoe fade” after a particular configuration of the JCB used for digging trenches and subsequently uprooting cables). Plus of course, risk of disruption to international traffic from sub-sea cable cuts which happen quite often in and around the Asia Pacific region.
