Sophos acquires Astaro
By SecurityAsia Editors | Jul 11, 2011
Sophos has announced that it has completed its acquisition of network security vendor Astaro.
According to a media release, the initial integration with the Astaro Security Gateway and Sophos Anti-Virus will bring real-time protection against malware using Sophos Live Protection infrastructure, a comprehensive architecture for real-time updates to users in offices anywhere around the globe, and Sophos Web protection, real-time blocking of malicious websites via SophosLabs extensive Web reputation systems; which classify over 50,000 infected Web pages every day.
The integration of both technologies will allow central management of anti-malware, Web and data control policies across endpoint, mobile and network enforcement points – including consumer-owned mobile devices and branch, home or remote offices.
Upon completing Astaro partner certification, Sophos partners will have access to the full network security portfolio including capabilities for protecting branch offices, log management and a network security gateway available in any delivery model. Likewise, Astaro partners will have the opportunity to become Sophos partners and deliver a complete set of endpoint, mobile and gateway solutions to their customers.

Geography appears to play a role in frequency of observed attacks on specific ports. For example, Port 23 (Telnet) is a favorite target for attacks observed to be originating from South Korea and Turkey, where it accounted for more than five times the number of attacks targeting the next most popular port (445 in both countries). Other instances of geography-based port targeting include observed attacks centered on Port 1433 (Microsoft SQL Server) in China and on Port 80 (WWW/HTTP) in Indonesia.
